MYSA Shootback program was always about children from the slums taking photos and making films from their perspective, using their imagination, developing their skills and creativity. From 1997 Shootback has been one of the most successful art & education programs in Nairobi. Now Fifth generation of Shootback is being trained to become professional photographers and filmmakers.

Shootback wants to make the first youth film festival in Kenya. It is crucial not only to teach youth how to make good films, but also to show them how their work can change the community they all come from the slums. We believe that bringing such thinking among teenagers is the essence of creating a civil society, where people take actions to improve the environment they live in and don’t just wait for help from the outside. In micro-scale we want the youth to take responsibility for what they do, and how their film passion can be also dedicated to the community.

The idea of MYFF is a “two way street”. The participants gain professional skills in filmmaking but in the same time they will have a task to transform their knowledge, so it will bring something to the common good of the Mathare community. That’s way there will be topic frame given to all the groups.

The Festival consists of:

5-days WORKSHOP for youth led by Shootback members and international guests.

1-days SCREENING which will take place in Mathare slum in Nairobi and other venues.
